Yet administrators, department chairs, and early-career researchers themselves describe a set of institutional incentives so consistently misaligned that the outcome — verification work as a subordinate, unrewarded category of scientific production — functions as an informal standard.

For a postdoctoral researcher or adjunct instructor, the same investment carries active career risk: time spent on verification work is time not spent generating the novel publications that hiring committees use to evaluate candidates.

Contingent Faculty as a Structural Solution
The growth of contingent academic labor over the past three decades has created a workforce particularly suited, from an institutional cost perspective, to absorbing the burden of low-prestige scientific work. Adjunct faculty — who now account for a majority of instructional staff at many American universities — typically receive per-course compensation without benefits, job security, or meaningful research support. When they conduct research at all, it is frequently under conditions that make high-risk, high-reward original science impractical.
Replication work, requiring methodological rigor but not necessarily novel conceptual frameworks, fits this contingent niche. It can be conducted with modest resources, completed within constrained timelines, and published — when it is published — in venues that do not significantly alter an adjunct's employment prospects in either direction. For the institution, this arrangement externalizes the reputational cost of reproducibility failures onto individual researchers who lack the standing to contest such assignments.
Career trajectory analyses of researchers who have published primarily in replication and reproducibility contexts reveal a consistent pattern: advancement into tenure-track positions is markedly slower, and attrition from academic science is markedly higher, among this cohort than among peers whose publication records emphasize original empirical findings. This disparity persists even when controlling for publication volume and citation rates, suggesting that the type of research — not merely its quantity — functions as a sorting mechanism in academic hiring.
The Incentive Misalignment at the Institutional Level
Universities face their own structural pressures that reinforce this dynamic. The current arrangement — in which verification is simultaneously described as essential and treated as expendable — is not sustainable. The researchers absorbing the cost of reproducibility work are, in many cases, the same researchers the field depends upon to constitute its next generation of independent scientists. Losing them to attrition, or training them to regard verification as a professional liability, degrades the long-term capacity of science to correct itself. That is a cost no institution, and no discipline, can afford to ignore indefinitely.
